Furniture can be exposed to vibration, tight access points and changing weather during a long-distance move. Careful preparation reduces scratches, loose parts and avoidable damage while making loading more efficient.
Create a furniture inventory
List large items and photograph their condition before packing. Record measurements for sofas, dining tables, bed frames and appliances. Confirm that each item can pass through doors, hallways and lifts at both addresses.
Disassemble only where practical
Remove detachable legs, shelves and bed-frame components when this makes the item safer to carry. Keep screws and fittings in labelled bags, then attach each bag securely to the matching item. Photograph complicated assemblies before taking them apart.
Protect surfaces and corners
Use clean moving blankets or suitable protective materials around timber, glass and upholstered furniture. Corner protectors help vulnerable edges, while stretch wrap can hold protective layers in place. Avoid placing adhesive tape directly on painted, polished or fabric surfaces.
Prepare drawers and doors
Empty heavy or fragile contents from cabinets and drawers. Secure doors so they cannot swing open, but do not force locks or fittings. Pack removable shelves separately and mark them clearly.
Plan for appliances
Follow manufacturer instructions when disconnecting and preparing appliances. Fridges and freezers should be emptied, cleaned and dried in advance. Washing-machine transit bolts should be used when required by the manufacturer.
Keep an arrival plan
Decide where large furniture will go before the truck arrives. Clear access routes and protect floors where appropriate. Check each item against your inventory during unloading.
